As you read this, world leaders are descending on Rio de Janeiro for the United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development, twenty years on from the first Earth Summit.

It’s no coincidence that we [NEF] chose today to release our third Happy Planet Index, which now, more than ever, delivers a powerful message about sustainability.

The Happy Planet Index measures what matters: the extent to which countries deliver long, happy, lives for the people that live in them, within environmental limits. The 2012 HPI report ranks 151 countries of which Costa Rica comes first and the UK 41st.

The results tell us something we instinctively know to be true – that progress is not just about wealth, and that it is possible to live both happily and sustainably. They show that while the challenges faced by nations are very different, the end goal is the same: to produce happy, healthy lives now and in the future.

In these challenging times we urgently need a clear compass to help us all move in the right direction so that we can move towards living on a Happy Planet. Share this e-mail and help us spread the word.

Unfortunately the assessment of a country appears not to take into consideration the impact it has on others. Witness the relatively high position of Israel versus the Palestinians it has subjugated and land it continues to illegally occupy.

None the less, the report is an important read.

..... but is this really generally the case? Where is the evidence, the expression of the instinct?

It seems to me that whole populations in developed societies become involved in systemic greed, where the perceived need to survive means that one acts to protect ones own self interest by default, and progress is indeed identified as being only about wealth.

This is where education and health become commodities to be bought and sold, and Privatisation is a logical "progressive" movement and the natural instinct to protect ones family takes the form of selfishness.

p.s. Nice to see the Forum back again...
