Hello and welcome!

Purpose of the forum

This forum was set up in August 2009 as a community forum to support sustainable living activities in the Horsham area, which encompasses the area covered by Horsham District Council and the parts of Chichester DC, Surrey, Crawley BC and East Sussex that are close to Horsham town.

The aim of the forum is to encourage an open exchange of information about all aspects of sustainable living and to enable people to make contact with one another and assist each other in practical ways.

We hope you will contribute your own ideas and start up new discussions whether you have been living off-grid for the last 30 years, have just switched to low energy light bulbs, or have some good tips for would-be gardeners. There is a wealth of information out there and we would love you to share what you know with other forum users.

Who is this forum for?

Above all this is a forum to enable people in the Horsham area to share skills and knowledge. In this respect it differs markedly from the usual online forums with their global reach and global membership; this forum also has a global online reach of course but it is intended to be used primarily by a local membership with the ultimate aim of meeting in person to pursue sustainable living activities together, starting with such informal activities as swapping surplus fruit and veg or using skills and knowledge to help others to collect rainwater or grow food better, which we hope will help in forming social networks and strengthening community spirit.

We feel it would be very beneficial if you could use your full name as your Username (CHANGE IT HERE) and give your HDC ward or village, or neighbouring council ward or village, as your Location (ADD/CHANGE IT HERE). This will help local residents to identify like-minded people living close-by and make it much easier to put names to faces when people meet in person. Please note: As of 23 January 2011, a valid full real name and location are now required. If you find your registration is not accepted, please respond to the Welcome to "Transition Horsham"‏ email.

People from outside the Horsham area or without connections to the Horsham area are welcome to join the forum but should remember that the topics should be related to the Horsham area.

Who is this forum not for?

This forum is not intended for people inside or outside the Horsham area intent on discussing general or non-Horsham area sustainability topics - there are other forums for that. It is also, of course, not intended for people with no intention of discussing sustainability - there are other forums for that as well!

Forum etiquette

Users are reminded of the terms agreed to on registration for the forum, reproduced in part below:

Quote:
You agree not to post any abusive, obscene, vulgar, slanderous, hateful, threatening, sexually-orientated or any other material that may violate any laws be it of your country, the country where “Transition Horsham” is hosted or International Law. Doing so may lead to you being immediately and permanently banned, with notification of your Internet Service Provider if deemed required by us. The IP address of all posts are recorded to aid in enforcing these conditions. You agree that “Transition Horsham” have the right to remove, edit, move or close any topic at any time should we see fit.

In short, we ask you to be nice to each other; that you be tolerant of other members' views and stage of understanding on the road to sustainability as nothing is more likely to put someone off joining in discussions than a fear of being judged.

Disputes are, we recognise, almost inevitable in a vibrant forum. However they should be about the substance of an argument, not the personalities of the protagonists. We ask that disputes be settled amicably by PM or email or - since we are real local people, not anonymous internet users - by phone or, even better, a face-to-face meeting at some convenient local venue. If disputes cannot be settled by any of these means, we reserve the right to take action against the worst and most persistent offenders, including temporary or permanent banning.

Members from outside the Horsham area whom we deem to be disruptive influences will be swiftly and permanently banned.

Spread the word

This forum is hosted by Transition Horsham as a community resource. It is, if you like, the online manifestation of Green Drinks.

We hope you enjoy the forum and look forward to reading your posts. If you are inspired by what you read here on the forum, PLEASE tell someone else about it! They don't need to become a forum member to benefit - they just need to know how to find it!

for Transition Horsham

P.S. If you haven't done so already, please say hello here and tell us a bit about yourself.

Updated 23 January 2011 because of the number of spammers this forum is now attracting and the change to the forum registration process that has been implemented.

Mark Eaton
